Chatting with Matt Howgate

We talk to Matt Howgate, Director of Bourne Lifts, to find out more
about what their business offers and what drives them to succeed.

What was your first job?
I studied engineering for three years at Bournemouth and Poole College, then started in the lift industry when I was 21 years old working at the Ford Motor Plant rebuilding the large goods/passenger lifts. After this project I stayed in the industry and learnt various areas of the trade from basic maintenance and repairs and the installation of a variety of passenger and goods lifts. In 2005, I joined ThyssenKrupp as a repair salesman and quickly worked my way to new lift sales manager for the south coast and London with individual projects worth in excess of £1.8m.

When was Bourne Lifts first established?
In 2013 I started and became a Director importing lifts for LiftKom to the UK market working with a number of European companies. Unfortunately, my ambitions where much greater and felt it was time for me to start on my own, so in 2015 I formed Bourne Lifts Limited and taking it to a limited company in 2017. In 2018, we had such a large growth in new lift installations and taking on over 100 lifts on maintenance, we formed Bourne Lift Services Limited to manage the service, call out and repair business.

Can you tell us what services you offer?
Bourne Lifts Group offer the full range of services from lift maintenance, lift repairs, lift upgrades, lift modernisation and our core business new lift installations. Currently, we close out between 60 and 70 units per year and this increase 10/15% year on year.

The team have been working on some very large projects for specialist warehouses and data centre with projects exceeding £1m and a 5 year contract worth over £6m.

What got you into this line of work?
My father was in engineering and a lecturer at the Bournemouth and Poole College and I found engineering interesting. The lifts I kind of fell in to but I don’t think I would change now. We have a great team of professionals and have some very good market sectors.

Do you work in both the residential and commercial sector?
Our main business is commercial properties and we work all over the UK up to Newcastle and possibly further in the next year.

What has been your most memorable installation to date?
As Bourne Lifts we have completed some very prestigious projects in London. We can’t detail who the projects are for but some of the properties you could ever dream off.

“Absolutely great company to work with, Thank you Matthew and Luke for your assistance. Our Company is based not too far from Bourne Lifts which makes the working relationship perfect.”
