Chatting with Sharon Canning

We talk to Sharon Canning, Owner and Director of Move On Sales & Lettings to find out more about what their business offers and what drives them to succeed.

When was Move On Sales & Lettings first established?
Prior to Move on, I had been working in the industry for 14 years and had been a landlord for 21 years. I went back to part time education in my late 30’s and studied to become an accountant (which has been an enormous help in my budgeting skills).

Move On was established in 2006. Having worked in the industry for 14 years up to that point it was the natural progression to own my own letting agency.

We are now in our 17th Year of trading and a multiple award-winning company. I have a great team around me.

Not long after starting Move On, I was recommended to read ‘The Emyth’ by Michael E Gerber. And I recommend this to new business owners myself now, it teaches you about systems from day one (even if you are a one man band) and we have to learn very often to grow two further heads – the manager head and the entrepreneur head as we very often go into business as a technician.

“What a helpful bunch of people! Very supportive and patient during our process and nothing was too much trouble for them.”

I do speak at local events and have over the years put on various seminars for our local landlords. I produced and presented a weekly two hour radio show for five years, that was dedicated to the
property industry.

The industry has changed massively over the last decade, mostly for the better, but as an agency we do far, far more than we did when I first started in the late eighties. There is so much red tape, legislations and paperwork that needs to be produced.

I miss the days when ‘mail’ meant the post and arrived in the morning and was dealt with, within the hour. Now we are constantly interrupted with mail all day.

What has been your most memorable property you have rented to date?
We broke all records for renting a property in Sandbanks. A three bedroom flat overlooking the harbour with the most amazing views. £11,100 pcm, but we couldn’t shout about it at the time as it was a well-known celebrity.

What drives you to succeed?
My ethos behind Move On is always to strive to make our landlords and tenants feel special, to create great, professional working relationships in a relaxed and fun environment. Tenants should feel as an agency they can trust us to sort out any issues quickly and efficiently and I want landlords to feel exactly the same as well as knowing the legal aspect of their responsibility, to receiving their rent on time and dealing with legal paperwork accurately. We strive to deliver excellence and give the landlord and tenant a service that exceeds what they expect.

I genuinely want to make people feel they are important. That anyone who touches Move On go away knowing they were listened to, and they are valued. I was brought up to believe if you work hard and are true and honest, the rewards will come back to you.

I do have a passion for operational excellence and I don’t believe I lack visionary (my staff will tease me when I have had a holiday as I always come back with new ideas). I am very disciplined towards my work but still need to work on my work/life balance.

“My partner and I have been renting for a number of years with a few different agencies/private landlords, and the team at Move On have by a mile been the most down to earth, easy to get hold of, understanding bunch!”
