Chatting with Glenn Ford

We talk to Glenn Ford from Sheers Gardens Limited to find out more about what their business offers and what drives them to succeed.

What was your first job?
One of my first jobs was working as a Greenkeeper at Broadway Golf Club. It started a love of Golf, which continues today.

When was Sheers Gardens Limited first established ?
I started Sheers in 2017 as a self-employed gardener. I was supported through a start-up business loan and provided with some initial mentorship through the scheme. I had been working for a family on their estate as their full-time gardener, it was a fantastic stepping stone and provided me with the inspiration to start my own business from learning from them and their entrepreneurial success.

What sets you apart from your competitors?
We are working amongst some great gardening businesses in this area, and I am well networked to some of these and use this professional space for support and advice sharing. Sheers has always prided itself on providing a fair price, with work completed using the right skills and tools.

Do you do work for both the commercial and private sector?
We work with both commercial and private households, but mostly our work is with local families supporting them with garden maintenance or larger projects. The latter is always a real pleasure, helping families transform their outdoor space to be able to enjoy together is a privilege.

“Gave them a call to sort out my parents garden, very polite and efficient. Would definitely recommend their services.”

What drives you to succeed?
I think motivations and drivers change, shaped by life events and what’s going on in the world around us. In my early 30s I wanted to have my own business and work for myself. My driver now is my daughter, and creating a sustainable business that offers employment to fellow gardeners. It’s very important to me to create a work environment where people can thrive and are looked after.

What has been your greatest achievement to date?
Probably this year (2023), expanding the business to two full-time employees, having a fleet of commercial vehicles and becoming VAT registered.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
It’s difficult to imagine continuing to do the physical work myself in 10 years’ time, I do not think my back will thank me. So, taking a step back and focusing on business development and growing the team.

If you could be anywhere in the world, where would you be and why?
My Wife and I travelled to Thailand in 2017, it was an incredible trip and we fell in love with the country. We are looking forward to going back and taking our daughter to experience their wonderful culture and beauty of the landscape soon.

What are your plans for 2024?
The vision for Sheers is to continue to expand over the next three years, I am keen to look at creating an apprenticeship opportunity for someone next year as a start to this.
