Getting to the root of it

Is your hair more ‘Donald Trump comb-over’ than ‘thick, glossy mane under a waterfall, Herbal Essence-style’? Then you’ve come to the right place!

Hair loss can come in all sorts of forms and affects both men and women. There are many reasons for it- a drop in hormones around the menopause, polycystic ovarian disease, and genetic conditions like alopecia and male- or female-pattern baldness. The treatments that the doctor can give you, such as oral prescription-only medicines and topical solutions tend to only have moderate success. The best way to combat hair-thinning is to draw upon the healing powers of your own body, using Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) technology.

We’ve talked before about using PRP or “Vampire Facials” to rejuvenate your skin, but it’s also one of the most effective treatments for the hair. Platelets in your blood contain growth factor, which stimulates the regeneration of tissue and allows the anagen stage of hair growth to be prolonged. This makes the hair more resilient and less likely to be damaged in later stages of the growth cycle. PRP therapy is also thought to increase blood flow to the scalp, which helps ‘wake-up’ dormant hair follicles. It is also an amazing solution to post-natal hair loss, as it’s all natural, drug-free and has no notable side effects.

The method is straightforward: you will have a small amount of blood drawn, which will be spun in a centrifuge to separate out the components. The PRP will then be injected into affected areas of the scalp at a precise depth under the skin, using a state-of-the-art mesotherapy injector device. This means there is minimal discomfort and you can even do it in your lunchbreak, as there’s very little downtime.

Repeated treatments will be needed to get the best results- we would usually recommend 3-4 to start with at monthly intervals, then a maintenance boost every 4-6 months to make the effects last. We would also recommend biotin (vitamin B7) injections to compliment your PRP treatment. Keratin is the protein that makes up hair, but it needs biotin to be produced. Therefore, a booster injection of it will improve your keratin infrastructure, leading to stronger, healthier hair.
