Home Insurance – Covid-19 – What you need to know

Most insurance companies are offering enhanced help and support to all their customers who may be affected by the impact of Coronavirus (Covid-19), but here are a few things to consider and check with your insurer.

Working from home: If you are working from home because of government advice, your home insurance should not be affected, but you may want to check the levels of cover if you have taken any office equipment home with you.

If your home becomes uninhabitable: If your home suffers damage from a fire, flood etc, your policy will continue to provide cover including funding of alternative accommodation. It is vitally important you contact your insurer to report the incident as soon as possible.

A friend or relative is staying during the lock-down period: If your guest has their own home insurance policy, this may cover their possessions while they are temporarily staying with you. There may be limits on the cover so they should check their policy. Remember that some claims for theft will only be accepted if there is evidence of a break-in, so make sure you fully trust the person who is staying with you.
