Planning a new kitchen and choosing the right worktop can feel daunting. It is one of the biggest decisions in the process and plays a huge part in bringing the whole space together. At Portman Stone, we have always believed that customers should be able to choose from genuinely high-quality materials, have their worktops made properly and still receive a competitive price, without feeling they have to compromise in one area to get another.
As a local, family-run business, we keep as much of the process as possible under one roof, from helping customers choose the right surface through to templating, fabrication and installation. This gives us greater control over the finished product and means customers know exactly who is responsible for their worktops from the moment they place an order through to installation.
One of the biggest advantages we can offer is the amount of material we physically hold in stock at our Christchurch premises, with one of the largest selections of stocked quartz and porcelain in the South, alongside a choice of granite, quartzite and other natural stones. Being able to see a full slab rather than deciding from a small sample or image online can make a huge difference, particularly with heavily veined designs where the movement and character of the surface is much easier to appreciate at full scale.
Holding such a large amount of stock also gives customers far more choice across different styles and budgets, while helping us keep lead times short. Many projects can move from templating to installation within just 5–10 working days, as the materials are already here rather than having to be specially sourced after an order is placed.
Once a material has been chosen, the worktop stays with us throughout the production process. Our own team laser templates the kitchen before the slabs are fabricated in our Christchurch factory using advanced CNC Donatoni machinery alongside experienced stone masons. We do not outsource our fabrication, which means we know exactly where every order is, who has worked on it and the standard it has been finished to before installation.
Keeping everything in-house is also one of the reasons we are able to remain so competitive on price. By stocking large quantities of material, carrying out fabrication ourselves and avoiding unnecessary layers of suppliers and subcontractors, we can offer a premium product without adding unnecessary cost at every stage. We are also happy to look at genuine like-for-like quotations from other local suppliers and, wherever possible, match or better them.
For us, quality is not only about the worktop itself. The sink and tap are two of the most heavily used parts of any kitchen, so we also offer a carefully selected range of high-quality stainless-steel sinks and taps that can be chosen alongside the worktop, making the process easier and ensuring everything works together as it should.
Being family-run is an important part of how we operate. We are not a national chain or an online company selling worktops that are made elsewhere; our reputation has been built locally over many years, with much of our work coming through recommendations from homeowners, kitchen companies, designers, builders and developers who have used us before.
