Hairspray at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, 8th – 11th January
Starting the new year on a high note, I chose to immerse myself in the magic of theatre—a perfect remedy for the January blues. What better way to lift the spirits than heading to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton to experience the vibrant and spectacular musical Hairspray?
Set in 1962 Baltimore, Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a teenager with big dreams and even bigger hair. Tracy wins a spot on the Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance programme, and quickly becomes an overnight sensation. As she navigates newfound fame, Tracy champions racial integration on the show, inspired by her friendships and belief in equality. Facing opposition from the show’s producer, Velma Von Tussle, and her rival, Amber Von Tussle, Tracy rallies her community to stand up for change.
This bold and powerful production delivers everything one could wish for in a fun-filled evening of musical theatre at its best. While addressing a serious subject matter with sensitivity, it dazzles audiences with humour, heart, and vibrant energy.
The casting was outstanding. From the lead roles to the ensemble, every performer showcased an exceptional level of talent, maintaining non-stop energy from start to finish. The much-loved, catchy songs will have you humming all the way home, whilst wishing your fellow theatre goers would join you in breaking out into an impromptu dance routine in the street as you head away from the theatre, inspired by the creative choreography.
Katie Brace shines in the role of Tracy Turnblad. From the moment the curtains lift, she commands the stage with a character full of zest for life and an unwavering belief in doing what is right. She is both funny and inspiring, captivating the audience with her exceptional singing and energetic commitment to the choreography.
At the heart of the show is the endearing relationship between Tracy’s parents, Edna and Wilbur Turnblad. Neil Hurst (Edna) and Dermot Canavan (Wilbur) create on-stage chemistry that is utterly charming. Their duet, “(You’re) Timeless to Me”, is a highlight of the show, blending humour and heartfelt affection in a way that had the audience breaking into spontaneous applause even before the song ended. It’s a moment of comedy gold that lifts the spirits.
Michelle Ndegwa delivers a powerhouse performance as Motormouth Maybelle. Her rendition of “I Know Where I’ve Been” is a true show-stopping moment, filled with emotional depth and sincerity. Her powerful voice had the audience on the edge of their seats, ending with heartfelt cheers of admiration echoing throughout the theatre.
Solomon Davy brings charm and swagger to the role of Link Larkin, Tracy’s love interest and the charismatic teen heartthrob. His smooth vocals and dynamic stage presence captivate the audience, through electrifying choreography and touching moments, Davy portrays Link’s journey with sincerity, making his relationship with Tracy all the more heartwarming as he chooses to stand on the right side of change.
Joanne Clifton is magnificent as Velma Von Tussle, delivering a performance filled with vigour and elegance. She masterfully executes the dance routines with flair and stuns the audience with her remarkable vocal ability. Paired with Allana Taylor as her daughter Amber, the two create a believable and amusing mother-daughter dynamic. Even when not centre stage, their side-stage antics add an extra layer of entertainment as they connive and vie for the limelight.
Katlo delivers a spirited and endearing performance as Little Inez, captivating the audience with her boundless energy and remarkable vocal strength. She captures our hearts as a symbol of hope for the future, portraying relentless determination in the face of discrimination, which she refuses to let define her.
Freya McMahon offers a wonderfully awkward yet fiercely loyal portrayal of Penny Pingleton, Tracy’s best friend. Her unwavering character commitment and comedic timing bring a delightful lightness to the performance. We watch her blossom throughout the show, falling in love with Seaweed, played by Reece Richards. Richards is captivating, his soulful vocals and effortless movement commanding attention during every dance routine. Together, they create a charming and dynamic on-stage pairing.
With its humour, heart, and irresistible songs, Hairspray delivers a timeless and powerful message about acceptance, diversity, and the transformative power of love and determination.
