A grand tradition by the sea
Nestled on Bournemouth’s prestigious East Cliff, the Cumberland Hotel is a four‑star Art Deco gem that first opened its doors in 1936–37, built on the grounds of the old Fern Cliff estate. With its grand Italian marble lobby, sweeping sea views, and glamorous 1920s–30s style, the hotel evokes the elegance of Miami’s Ocean Drive.
During the Second World War, it was briefly commandeered to house defence troops, and post‑war became Europe’s largest Orthodox Jewish hotel, complete with its own synagogue and nightly dance bands.
Over the years, the shimmering lobby and iconic poolside Lido have welcomed many famous faces—Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra have lingered here, their portraits a nod to the hotel’s golden‑age
Hollywood connection.
Curry nights: a local gem
These days, the Cumberland is beloved not just for its history but for its legendary Thursday curry nights. For just £19.95, guests enjoy a feast of authentic, aromatic flavours that celebrate the best of Indian cuisine—an unbeatable value that brings a vibrant midweek buzz to Bournemouth locals.

A fine-dining feast to remember
We indulged in an outstanding culinary lineup starting with exquisite Poole Bay oysters—briny, fresh, and melted on the tongue—followed by a remarkable Spanish chorizo Scotch egg, perfectly crisp on the outside with a yolk that oozes. The highlight of our starters, though, was the pan‑seared Loch Fyne scallops, caramelised to golden perfection and kissed with sea salt and herb butter: simple yet sublime.
For mains, the chef’s seafood linguine stole the show—plump prawns, tender mussels, and chewy clams bathed in a silky, saffron‑infused cream sauce.
Equally impressive was the fillet steak, outstanding in its tenderness and richness, dressed with a luxurious Isle of Wight blue‑cheese sauce whose tang cut beautifully through the meaty juiciness.
Dessert was a show‑stopper: a Dubai chocolate tart—decadently dark, with a velvety ganache inside a crisp pastry case—elevated by a dusting of pistachio and a quenelle of cream. Each spoonful was rich, balanced, and utterly indulgent—a sweet finale to a memorable evening.
