Suzuki reveal first full EV – The E Vitara
It may look like a standard update and facelift of the Vitara, already a capable and hugely popular model for the Japanese car maker, but this is a Vitara with a difference. Suzuki has unveiled its first mass-production full EV, the e VITARA. Production will commence at Suzuki’s plant in India in spring next year, with sales expected to begin in various countries, including Europe, India, and Japan, in summer 2025.
e VITARA is based on a concept model which was showcased at the Auto Expo held in India in January 2023, and at the JAPAN MOBILITY SHOW in October of the same year. It marks Suzuki’s first global strategic BEV model and e VITARA features an electric 4WD system, ALLGRIP-e, that provides not only off-road capability but also powerful performance.
The exterior features a striking design characterised by large-diameter tyres and a long wheelbase, while the interior incorporates an integrated display with advanced equipment and tough-looking panels and centre console.
Its BEV powertrain consists of the highly efficient eAxle that integrates the motor and inverter, along with the lithium iron-phosphate batteries designed for safety and reliability. It achieves the characteristic EV nimble acceleration from standstill and sharp acceleration during overtaking from low to high speeds.
The electric 4WD system is driven by two independent eAxles and an electric 4WD system that utilizes Suzuki’s acknowledged expertise in four- wheel drive technology, including a Trail mode that enables a smooth departure from rough terrain by applying brakes to spinning tires and distributing drive torque to the opposite tyre (LSD function).
This is a new and exciting addition to Suzuki’s line-up and carrying the Vitara name will surely assist in attracting buyers. Key to the e VITARA’s success will be its range and charging options, but more important will be price as Suzuki has always been able to offer competitive pricing and make their cars eminently affordable.
