In this follow-up interview, we dive into the highs, the lessons learned from setbacks, and his aspirations for the future. Jayden’s story continues to inspire, showcasing the power of passion, perseverance, and the support of a dedicated team.
Jayden, you’re so young and already achieving a lot in karting! What first got you interested in the sport, and how did you get started?
I’ve been watching Formula 1 with my dad since I was 6 years old, then when I was 8 my Uncles bought me a voucher for South Coast Karting. I absolutely loved it and have been Karting ever since.
We last spoke to you a year ago, and you were moving on from Cadets to junior Karting, how has it been going?
I moved up to the juniors at South Coast Karting and my first competition was the King of the Coast. I was excited but nervous because the Karts are bigger and more powerful but I raced really well and managed to finish 3rd which was great for my first junior race.
You also competed in the Junior Championship at South Coast Karting, which has just finished, how did you get on?
I knew this championship was going to be really competitive as there were a lot of experienced junior drivers in the competition. I was really pleased with how I did, I was consistently in the A final and gained 4 podium finishes. I was one of only 2 drivers to finish 1st twice. The last race was my best where I won the qualifying, won the Pre A final and won the final. This meant I finished 3rd in the championship which was a great achievement for me.
Alongside the Junior Championship you’ve also moved into owner Karting, how did you make the transition?
A friend of my dad’s introduced us to a team Nibsport. I did a test day for them and it went really well. I joined the team 5 months ago. It’s very different from the corporate Karts that I’m used to racing, the karts are much faster and the competition’s are at a higher level.
How has it been competing nationally since joining the Nibsport team?
It’s a huge step up as I’m racing against some of the best drivers in the country. Matt Isaacs the owner and his team have been amazing, I’ve learnt so much from them. The coaching, data analysis after each session and the encouragement they give me has really helped me progress.
You’ve only been in the team 5 months, what have you achieved in that short space of time?
I have raced in 4 competition’s now and am really pleased with how it’s going. I managed to get into the A final twice and I won top Novice in my last race, which was amazing.
What kind of support have you had? Sponsorship is a big part of competitive karting, what does the support you’ve had and the support of your sponsors mean to you?
My family, friends and sponsors – Yesss Electrical (Poole Branch), Edgewater Group, Fitnfix Auto (Bournemouth) and BH Live Active have all been a great support, I couldn’t do this without them. Having my sponsors onboard has helped me on this journey and I extremely grateful to them all. My dad has also been great and is now my mechanic, which helps massively.
Success at such a young age can be thrilling, but what about times when things don’t go as planned? How do you deal with setbacks, tough races and pressure when you’re on the track? Do you have a specific routine or mindset?
I’ve had some great highs this year with 10 Podiums including Enduro races and Mini Grand Prix’s. With this sport you also have lows, I’ve had my kart breakdown in a final, been knocked of the track, stalled at the start of a race. I have to just take it and move on as it’s part of racing. I’m not the kind of person to get angry or stressed about it, I find keeping calm and motivated helps me focus. The highs definitely outweigh the lows though.
Also my karting friends are great, through the good times and the bad, we all support each other and cheer each other on.
Your accomplishments must inspire a lot of young racers, What advice would you give to other kids who want to pursue competitive karting?
Start with a local club, like South Coast Karting. You get to learn essential driving skills and how to compete. Also get advise from people already in the industry. If you are thinking of moving into owner driving join a team like Nibsport, you really do get so much help, support and guidance.
Finally, what’s next for you? Do you have any specific goals or a vision for your future in karting or even motorsport in general?
Next year I will continue driving nationally with the team. I have a few more races before I am no longer classed as a novice, so it will be great so see what I can do.
My goal is to continue racing the best I can, and it would be amazing to eventually drive for a great team in a single seater car.
