Christmas!

Christmas seems to be getting earlier and earlier each year. Before the summer is even over thoughts are turning to baubles, wreaths and fairy lights. Restaurants & retail outlets battle to be the first to publish their Christmas Menus, Gift ideas and Events and the pressure is on to get those Christmas parties booked before we’ve even seen the clocks turn back.

It’s with a sigh that we reluctantly join the early-bird brigade as we fear that we’ll get left behind if we’re not ready for the festivities as soon as the flip flops have gone firmly back into storage. But, is this really something  we  should feel  begrudgingly  about?

Depending on your beliefs, Christmas, or at least the festive part of the year, represents a time in which we can see some personal release & stop being so hard on ourselves. It’s the one time of year that we can slow down, think about ourselves, “eat, drink and be merry” until our hearts content & for the majority of the working world, deadlines relax & the work streams begin to wind down in the weeks leading up to the big day.

For those working in the industry’s that work around the clock, those in the retail and hospitality world, those working for the NHS as nurses and doctors, those in the police force and service men and women, the picture that I’ve painted above looks very different. For these guys, Christmas is the busiest, most hectic and most stressful event in their working calendar and the merriment that season brings, not so easily come by and it’s why I never have or will open my restaurants on Christmas Day, it’s a day for family, and if I won’t work  it, neither will my staff.

So, is it torturous that we begin talking, planning and scheduling Christmas festivities so early? Perhaps not- Maybe, it gives those who are going to spend the season working harder than they’ve ever worked the opportunity to celebrate in their own way and catch
a  glimpse  of  the  joy  that  this  season  brings.
