Sunscreens & your skin

Protect your skin from sun damage
Protecting your skin from the sun is the best anti-ageing trick around. Using a high-factor SPF sunscreen (all year round, not just in the summer months!) is the most important step in your skincare routine and will help slow ageing and prevent sun damage.

Chemical vs Physical
This advice is nothing new, we’ve heard it all before. What you might not know is that there are two types of sunscreen available, chemical and physical. The difference between them is how these sunscreens work to protect your skin from harmful rays from the sun, either by absorbing the rays or reflecting them.

Which is best?
Physical sunscreens create a physical barrier between your skin and the sun. Rather than absorbing into the skin, these products remain on the skin’s surface. Physical sunscreens are broad spectrum and protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

At Elegant Aesthetic, we stock physical sunscreen by Alumier MD. Their Clear Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 42 is a brilliant option for those with sensitive, red or acne-prone skin. This lightweight, non-pore blocking sunscreen provides powerful broad-spectrum protection using a combination of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, both physical filters. Physical filters are generally used in natural sunscreen products and are ideal for sensitive skin.

Chemical sunscreens, unlike physical versions, penetrate both the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin. The chemicals within chemical sunscreen function on the surface of the skin, absorbing the sun’s rays before they can penetrate the dermis and cause damage.

Our expert opinion is that physical sunscreen is best, however, please remember, any SPF is better than no SPF! Look after your skin and protect it against sun damage. For more information and advice pop by the clinic and speak to Shikha.
