The truth about interior designers

Katie Thomas, Design Director of KTM Design and Regional Director of the Society of British and International Design (SBID)

Interior Design plays a big part in everyday life, and is an important technique that is given high attention all over the world nowadays. It gives a building a soul and makes a space more functional, pleasant and liveable.

Great spaces do not happen by accident, and although some people have a gift for composing rooms in a way that is pleasing to the eye, as well as functional, most people struggle with this. It seems so easy, but they cannot make it happen. Interior Designers have extensive training that accompanies an interior design degree. When we look at and plan a room, we always base it on the principles of design: scale and proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis, and harmony. For a room to come together well, all these principles should be considered. We also pay attention to the elements of design: space, line, shape and mass, texture, light, colour, and pattern. As designers, we use our knowledge in these areas to create interiors that are physically and psychologically comfortable,  as  well as beautiful  and  functional.

People often think that hiring an Interior Designer will be too expensive, or that they’d lose control of the project. This is not true. Instead, when you work with a
designer, you are much less likely to make expensive mistakes, you are more likely to meet your budget, you will have an expert working with you and making sure that the end result is what you were hoping for, and you  will  save  time,  headaches  and  money
