Your opportunity to get involved with Poole Maritime Festival

As the countdown to Poole Maritime Festival continues, there are plenty of opportunities for local people and businesses to get involved and play a part in one of the largest events to take place in Poole in recent years.

Poole Maritime Festival is an exciting week of activities which takes place from Monday 15 to Sunday 21 May 2017. It includes the prestigious European Maritime Day, one of the largest maritime events in Europe which will be held at Lighthouse, Poole, a programme of events specifically aimed at local businesses plus an exciting line up of family entertainment and activities which everyone can enjoy.

Local people and businesses can help make Poole Maritime Festival a success.

Borough of Poole needs a talented group of people to support the Poole Maritime Festival team and this is your chance to join them. Whether this is as a volunteer manager or a volunteer helping to greet visitors, directing people to events and being an ambassador for Poole, there is a role for everyone. Volunteers are needed from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 May and full details are available at www.poolemaritimefestival.co.uk/volunteer.

If younger members of your family are looking to get involved and be creative, then the children’s flag competition may be just the thing. It is an ideal opportunity for young children to have fun designing a flag that will be used to decorate Poole during Poole Maritime Festival.

The competition is open to all children aged between 5 and 11 years. All flags must have a maritime themed design to support Poole Maritime Festival.

Thanks to the competition sponsor, Flagmakers, fifteen winning designs will be made into full sized flags and flown in various locations in Poole Town Centre before and during the European Maritime Day two day conference. The flags will be seen by residents, visitors to the area and approximately 1,000 delegates from across Europe.

All entries must be returned to Poole Maritime Festival Flag Competition, Borough of Poole, Civic Centre, Poole BH15 2RU by midnight on Friday 7 April 2017. Full details and entry form are available at www.poolemaritimefestival.co.uk/childrens-flag-competition/.

Mayor of Poole, Cllr Xena Dion, said: “We feel really proud that Poole is hosting European Maritime Day this year as it is the first and only time this prestigious event will be held in the UK.  We are keen that the whole community has the opportunity to be part of this, whether through volunteering, designing flags, coming to one of the many events making up Poole Maritime Festival, or attending the European Maritime Day Conference.

“As one of the judges for the children’s flag competition I am especially looking forward to seeing creative and imaginative designs celebrating Poole’s maritime heritage past, present and future.”
