Using A Removal Firm or Man & Van

Steve has many years experience in the moving and storage industry. Mr. M of Wimbourne asked, “What is the difference in using a removals company or a man & a van?”

Steve says: “It is advisable to choose a removals company that is committed to the principles of British Association of Removers membership, as this will ensure that your removals company uses legal, licensed vehicles. There will also be protection for your deposit and arbitration or free conciliation in the unlikely event something goes wrong”.

Steve went on to explain: “Small firms or a ‘Man & Van’ very often don’t employ their staff directly hiring casual labour when needed. If the crew aren’t professionals then you could find your possessions may not be looked after or packed well for the journey. Also bear in mind that if the crew aren’t employed full time, once the move is complete and they move on, there maybe no comeback”.

Steve says: “When undertaking a house move with just a verbal agreement and a shake of hands, as is often the case with a ‘Man & Van’, you have very little redress if anything should go wrong. At the very least, you should get a signed agreement, which sets out the service that will be provided and has clear contact details for who you’re dealing with.

Choosing an established quality removal company who are members of the British Association of Removers (BAR) will minimise the risks, and your stress levels on the day”.
